The Oath of Allegiance
Today my son and 39 others took the Oath of Allegiance today and in just over a weeks time they will all start their career in the British Army. Apparently this is one of the largest groups they have had. Is this because of the recession? Why are our young men and women so keen to sign up?
I am so proud of my son and am behind him 110% - but my pride is obviously tinged with apprehension and concern. Every time you pick up a paper or turn on the TV the media bombard us with the latest casualties in Afghanistan. Are the army well enough equipped for the battle they face?
Only yesterday in Worcester (where we live) hundreds of mourners celebrated the life of Private Jason Williams, a 23-year-old soldier serving with 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) died in an explosion in Helmand province.
My son is joining the 2nd Battalion Mercian Regiment (Worcesters and Foresters) Do I wish that instead of leaving for Harrogate he would go to the local college with the 8 GCSE's he gained yesterday and do something less risky? Not really - he has wanted to join the army since I put a camo net on his bedroom ceiling for his 7th birthday!! Who is to say that staying at home with the perils of drinking, drugs and mopeds etc will be a safe option?
I have one week left with my son before he goes to army training and I am determined to savour each day!
